Ryan C. Briggs appointed assistant professor of political science
Ryan C. Briggs has been appointed an assistant professor in the Department of Political Science at Virginia Tech’s College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences.
Briggs is one of 27 new tenure-track faculty members at the college this fall. The new hires are part of the college’s ongoing efforts to attract renowned scholars to strengthen and expand its teaching, research, and engagement programs. The college has added more than 100 full-time permanent faculty members in the past four years.
Briggs’ scholarship examines how international forces influence the internal politics and institutional evolution of low-income states. His current focus is on how foreign aid affects electoral politics in sub-Saharan Africa. He will teach undergraduate comparative politics classes and master’s degree level research methods.
Briggs has been published in The Journal of Modern African Studies, International Interactions, and has an article pending in World Development.
He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Ottawa and a Ph.D. from American University.
