Students can explore academic opportunities at 2014 Majors Fair
As the new academic year gets underway, the annual Majors Fair provides students the opportunity to explore the university’s diverse academic offerings, including the many majors and minors available.
For the 2014-15 academic year, there are new majors and minors for students to consider in addition to already existing programs.
The Office of Undergraduate Advising and Student Government Association are co-hosting the event on Wednesday, Sept. 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Commonwealth Ballroom in Squires Student Center.
Representatives from all of the undergraduate colleges and most of the university’s majors will be on site to answer student questions, including prerequisites and change of major requirements. The program is informal, so students can stop by as their schedule allows.
“The Majors Fair provides a relaxed environment to research areas of interest and learn about the diverse programs at Virginia Tech, especially for students who may be considering changing their major or even adding a minor or additional major,” said Kimberly Smith, director of undergraduate advising. “Students can ask questions about each program’s curriculum and requirements, while also discovering how a new major or additional major or minor may change their plan of study.”
“All attendees will have the opportunity to see and compare the various majors available, and determine what truly interests them and fits well with their future career goals,” said Hannah Thomas of Troy, Illinois, a junior majoring in political science in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences and Student Government Association’s director of academic affairs. “The SGA wants students to be happy with their academic choices. By co-sponsoring this event, we are hope to assist students with their academic selection process and ensure their time spent at Virginia Tech is absolutely the best it can be.”
In addition to information about academic majors and minors, students can discover other ways to enhance their undergraduate education, through supplemental programs and experiences. The Global Education Office, Career Services, Health Professions Advising, and the Student Success Center will be represented at the fair.
