Claire K. Robbins joins education faculty
Claire Kathleen Robbins has been appointed an assistant professor of higher education in the School of Education at Virginia Tech’s College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences.
Robbins is one of 14 new faculty members at the college this fall. These new hires are part of the college’s ongoing efforts to attract renowned scholars to strengthen and expand its teaching, research, and engagement programs. More than 70 full-time permanent faculty members have been added to the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences in the past three years under the leadership of Dean Sue Ott Rowlands.
With more than 10 years of experience in teaching, student affairs practice, and research, Robbins is a member of the American College Personnel Association College Student Educators International 2014 Convention Planning Team and co-chair for the Next Generation Conference.
Her research interests include racial consciousness, identity, and dissonance among white women in higher education; social identity construction among students and faculty in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines; and the use of qualitative methods and critical frameworks to investigate experiences and outcomes in higher education.
At Virginia Tech, Robbins is teaching courses on student development theory; diversity-related educational research; theoretical foundations of higher education; and diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice in student affairs and higher education.
Robbins holds a Ph.D. in college student personnel administration from the University of Maryland at College Park, a Master of Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a Bachelor of Arts in education and sociology/anthropology from Swarthmore College.
