10th Annual Progeny Film Festival to showcase student talent
The 10th annual Progeny Film Festival is coming to downtown Blacksburg.
This juried film festival showcases student films from southwest Virginia which get the rare opportunity to be experienced on the big screen and judged. It will be held on Saturday, May 11, at the Lyric Theatre. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and admission is free.
The festival is sponsored by the Virginia Tech Department of Theatre and Cinema and the student-led Association of Movie Productions (AMP).
Submissions are screened by a panel and the top choices are selected to show at the festival. Immediately after the screening, the audience gets a chance to vote for their favorite to win the audience award, and a faculty committee chooses the winners for other categories including best picture, judge's award, best performance, best cinematography, and best editing.
Since 2003, Progeny has drawn audiences each year to the festival for entertainment and exploration of creative student work.
Last year's festival saw more than 30 student film submissions, screened 14 selected pieces, and awarded over $1,000 in prizes. The selected films represent multiple genres, offering audiences a unique and varied experience. Filmmakers include university students from Virginia Tech, Radford University, Hollins University, and Roanoke College.
