Virginia Tech marks Earth Week 2013 April 22 to 26
Virginia Tech’s annual Earth Week celebration, to be held April 22 through 26, aims to promote positive environmental awareness and encourage the adoption of green practices across campus and the community.
The Environmental Coalition hosts Earth Week each year with the support of Virginia Tech’s Office of Energy and Sustainability.
"Student involvement plays a major role in advancing sustainability on our campus, and Earth Week 2013 coordinator Grace Friedhoff and her planning team have done an outstanding job in assembling an exciting and engaging program," said Denny Cochrane, sustainability program manager.
Four years ago, Virginia Tech adopted its Climate Action Commitment and Sustainability Plan which was unanimously approved by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors June 1, 2009.
This year, Earth Week will kick-off on Monday, April 22, at 11:30 a.m. on the Henderson Lawn near the corner of College Avenue and North Main Street. Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger and Blacksburg Mayor Ron Rordam will preside over a tree planting celebration. The sycamore tree being planted is a clone of the tree that once stood there and dated back to 1872, the year the university was founded.
The event is open to the public and will go be held rain or shine.
Additional events will be held during Earth Week. A complete listing of events can be found at the Earth Week website.
