Christopher Zobel, professor of business information technology in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, was recently named the R.B. Pamplin Professor of Business Information Technology by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

Established in 1994, the R.B. Pamplin Professorship in Business Information Technology is one of several named professorships established with part of the $10-million gift presented to the college by the Robert B. Pamplin family. The professorship supports excellence in management science and information technology education.

A member of the Virginia Tech faculty since 1998, Zobel has gained an international reputation for his research on the application of information technology and the development of computer-based decision support systems to solve problems in the fields of disaster operations management and environmentally focused decision-making.

His work has been published in the leading peer-reviewed journals in the field of management science and information technology and he is active in the International Association for the Study of Information Systems for Crisis Response and Management.

Zobel has served on 22 graduate committees and has taught 10 different courses in the Department of Business Information Technology. He received the Pamplin College of Business Teaching Excellence Award on three occasions, the MBA Outstanding Faculty Award, and Virginia Tech's Certificate of Teaching Excellence.

He received his bachelor’s degree from Colgate University, a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia.
