Division of Student Affairs recognizes fall 2012 Safe Zone trainers
Virginia Tech’s Division of Student Affairs acknowledges seven individuals who served as Safe Zone trainers this fall.
The Safe Zone program educates the university community on topics related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals and their allies. Coordinated through Multicultural Programs and Services, the program reinforces the university’s commitment to providing a more inclusive and accepting campus environment.
Training workshops address common LGBTQ terms, sexual orientation versus gender identity, and LGBTQ resources and partners around the New River Valley. After completion of training, participants have the opportunity to join the Safe Zone program and receive a nameplate that designates them as an individual who is committed to providing both a supportive environment for — and accurate information about — LGBTQ students and their experiences.
They may also choose to be listed on the university’s Safe Zone map, which currently lists nearly 200 individuals.
“The heart and soul of the Safe Zone program comes from the dedication of our trainers,” said Ray Williams, director of multicultural programs and services. “The success of this program lies squarely on their shoulders.”
The fall 2012 Safe Zone trainers were:
- Rebecca Bryce, coordinator of the New River Valley Raft Crisis Hotline;
- Catherine Cotrupi, LGBTQ coordinator for Multicultural Programs and Services;
- Ross C. Edmonds, Web designer/programmer and software manager for University Libraries;
- Brittany Maffett, assistant residential learning coordinator for Housing and Residence Life;
- Christian Matheis, doctoral student in ethics and political philosophy;
- Amanda Morris, assistant professor of chemistry; and
- Kevin Wogenrich, residential learning coordinator for Housing and Residence Life.
Four additional trainers will begin leading sessions in the spring.
