Update: Funeral services have been scheduled for John B. 'J.J.' Stinson, the Virginia Tech student who died last week while studying in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland.

The family will receive visitors on Friday, April 20, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Jefferson Funeral Chapel, 5755 Castlewellan Drive, Alexandria, VA 22315, 703-971-7400. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, April 21, at 11 a.m. at St. Louis Catholic Church, 2907 Popkins Lane, Alexandria, VA 22306, 703-765-4421.

John Benson Stinson, Jr., age 20, of Alexandria, VA, better known as J.J. passed away on April 6. He is survived by his parents, John B. Stinson, Sr. and Eileen Doherty and his sister, Kerry Stinson. He is also survived by his aunts, Kathleen DeGuilme, Dorothy Budd, Mary Burton, Donna Christian; his uncles, Mark Stinson and James Budd; and many cousins on both sides of the family. 

Stinson graduated from St. Louis School in 2006, Bishop Ireton High School in 2010, earned his Eagle Scout Award in 2010, and recently became an Associate of the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales. He had been active in Boy Scouts, altar servers, theatre, and music. He loved his family, his friends, making music, conversation, and helping others.

Campus memorial gathering for John B. 'J.J.' Stinson set for Tuesday, April 17

BLACKSBURG, Va., April 13, 2012 -- Update: A campus memorial gathering to remember the life of John B. "J.J." Stinson, the Virginia Tech student who died earlier this week in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland, has been scheduled on Tuesday, April 17, at 6 p.m. in War Memorial Chapel.

Fr. John Grace, chaplain for Catholic Campus Ministry at Virginia Tech, will preside over the service.

In memoriam: John B. 'J.J.' Stinson, junior, College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences and University Honors

BLACKSBURG, Va., April 12, 2012 -- John B. “J.J.” Stinson of Alexandria, Va., a junior University Honors student majoring in philosophy in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, died earlier this week in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland. He was 20 years old.

Local authorities are investigating the cause of death and indicate there are no signs of foul play.

Stinson was spending the spring semester at Virginia Tech’s Center for European Studies and Architecture. He was among 30 students participating in the university’s Presidential Global Scholars program. The program brings ambitious University Honors students and faculty together in an intercultural learning environment that allows the students to better understand the world and what they might accomplish.

A Dean’s List student, Stinson was very active in the Newman Community. Tributes may be posted to their website.
