Virginia Tech community advised to stay informed, prepared
BLACKSBURG, Va., Aug. 25, 2011 - Hurricane Irene is projected to impact the southeastern United States coastline this weekend. Current forecast models indicate Irene will pass over or near the eastern coast of North Carolina and Virginia Saturday afternoon into Sunday, bringing sustained high winds, heavy rain, and potential flooding.
Virginia Tech has a number of research and teaching facilities in the Hampton Roads, Richmond, and National Capital Region areas that may be affected by the storm. While Irene is still a few days out, people in those areas along and east of Interstate 95 should closely monitor local media and the National Weather Service for the latest updates.
The season’s first hurricane should serve as a reminder to the entire Virginia Tech community to review and assess their personal preparedness and emergency plans. The Office of Emergency Management recommends that you:
Stay tuned to local media for storm information.
- Follow directions issued by local authorities. If you are along the coast, know the evacuation routes.
- Top off your car’s gas tank.
- Fully charge your cell phone.
- Have cash available for emergencies.
- Inventory your family emergency kit. Read more on what should be in a family emergency kit.
- Make sure to have prescriptions filled; necessary items for elderly, babies, and children; and provisions for pets.
