Dennis Jones honored with emeritus status
Dennis Jones, associate professor of architecture in the School of Architecture + Design in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the “associate professor emeritus” title by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
The title of emeritus may be conferred on retired professors and associate professors, administrative officers, librarians, and exceptional staff members who are specially recommended to the board of visitors by Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board of visitors receive an emeritus certificate from the university.
A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1984, Jones has made substantial contributions to the advancement and integration of computing in the curriculum of the architecture program.
Jones made significant contributions to computer applications research and development and was one of 12 worldwide finalists in the Mobile Rules competition sponsored by the Nokia Corporation. He has received several honors for his papers, including best paper at the International Conference on Systems Research and Cybernetics.
He served as a design resource expert for the National Mayor’s Institute on Design and as an advisory panel member of the National Endowment for the Arts’ Design Arts Program. Jones was a featured speaker for four years at the nation’s largest conference on design technology, AEC DESCON Systems.
In addition, Jones founded the National Organization of Minority Students chapter at Virginia Tech, provided mentoring to minority students, and served as chapter advisor.
Jones received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from University of Michigan and a Master of Architecture degree from Columbia University.
