Stephen Boyle honored with emeritus status
Stephen Boyle, professor of biomedical sciences and pathobiology and director of Center for Molecular Medicine and Infectious Diseases in the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the “professor emeritus” title by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
The title of emeritus may be conferred on retired professors and associate professors, administrative officers, librarians, and exceptional staff members who are specially recommended to the board of visitors by Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board of visitors receive an emeritus certificate from the university.
A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1984, Boyle made significant contributions to research on vaccine development related to zoonotic diseases and gene regulation. He has written more than 100 publications and received four U.S. patents in the course of his career.
He was a founding member of the Alliance for Contraception for Cats and Dogs and served on its board and as chair of its Scientific Advisory Committee.
In addition, Boyle advised and numerous Multicultural Academic Opportunities Program undergraduate students and Post-Baccalaureate Research and Education Program graduate students. He also advised graduate students in biomedical and veterinary medical sciences, served as graduate advisor for seven master’s degree and six doctoral degree students, served as an advisory member of more than 20 graduate student committees, and trained seven post-doctoral fellows.
Boyle received his bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University and a master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Rhode Island.
