Pamplin professor named Fellow of Decision Sciences Institute
Cliff T. Ragsdale, Bank of America Professor of Information Technology in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, has been named a Fellow of the Decision Sciences Institute (DSI).
A resident of Blacksburg, Ragsdale received the honor during the DSI’s annual meeting in New Orleans last November. He is one of only 108 scholars worldwide to receive this distinction, which recognizes exceptional contributions to the theory and practice of decision sciences and is considered among the highest honors for scholars in this field.
Ragsdale was recognized for his many contributions to the profession and to DSI, including outstanding service as treasurer, vice-president at large, coordinator of the new faculty development consortium, chair of the instructional innovation award competition, proceedings coordinator, and as chair and member of the investment advisory committee. He has also served the Southeast Decision Sciences Institute in various positions.
Ragsdale has published more than 40 articles in such journals as Decision Sciences, Decision Support Systems, OMEGA, European Journal of Operations Research, and Naval Research Logistics. He serves on the editorial advisory boards of several journals.
He has received Pamplin College awards for teaching excellence. His book, Spreadsheet Modeling & Decision Analysis, provided an important innovation in management science education as the first textbook to integrate Windows-based spreadsheet software in this discipline. It has become one of the best-selling textbooks in this market and has been used in business schools in the United States and around the world.
Widely regarded as a thought-leader in management science/operations research education, Ragsdale has participated in a variety of teaching-related workshops and conferences and discussed his ideas about teaching management science in journal articles.
Ragsdale earned his doctorate in management science and information technology from the University of Georgia. He received his master’s and bachelor’s degrees from the University of Central Florida.
The Decision Sciences Institute, which has approximately 3,500 members worldwide, is a cross-disciplinary, international professional association dedicated to advancing the science and practice of decision-making.
