Virginia Tech interim director of student activities named
Monica Quarles Hunter, associate director of campus programs at Virginia Tech, has been appointed interim director of student activities.
In this role, Hunter will be responsible for all student activities functions at Virginia Tech and set policies pertaining to student programming, working to ensure that the total program offerings are relevant to the needs of all student cultural groups. This includes oversight of student programming and the advisement of major programming organizations, leadership development, registration and funding of student organizations, accounting for student activity fees, and the advisement of the Student Government Association. The director of student activities position has been vacant since the retirement of Nicki Cantrell last spring.
Guy A. Sims, assistant vice-president for student affairs at Virginia Tech, made the announcement of Hunter’s appointment. “As we look to re-clarify and reorganize our units, it is important to provide leadership on a daily basis to the office,” said Sims.
Hunter has been associate director of campus programs at Virginia Tech for three years. She is a native of Covington, Va., and two-time Radford University alumnus, earning her Bachelor of Science degree in psychology in 1993 and Master of Science degree in counselor education and student personnel services in 1995.
From 1995 to 1999 Hunter worked at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro as the assistant director for programming in the department of student life. In 1999, Hunter returned to Radford as the associate director for student activities. In 2004 she became the director of the office of multicultural and international student services at Radford. Hunter came to Virginia Tech in 2006 as the associate director of campus programs.
