University crowns 2009 Homecoming King and Queen
Virginia Tech's 2009 Homecoming King and Queen were crowned during Homecoming weekend after weeks of campaigning. Matthew Darnley, sponsored by the German Club, and Michelle Davis, sponsored by the Student Alumni Associates of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association, won this year's titles of Homecoming King and Queen.
Matthew Darnley, of Bridgeville, Pa., is a senior majoring in political science in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. He is a cadet major in the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets, serving as Charlie Company’s commander. Darnely is a part of Army ROTC, in Ranger Company, part of the Skipper Crew, and is a recipient of the Emerging Leader Scholarship. Outside the corps, Darnley is the current leader of the German Club at Virginia Tech, and a participant in Relay for Life and the Big Event.
Michelle Davis, of Clarksville, Md., is a senior majoring in marketing management in the Pamplin College of Business. Davis is a New Student Orientation assistant, vice president of fraternity relations for Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, Hokie Ambassador, Ring Dance Decorations Chair at Virginia Tech. Davis is also involved in community service throughout the town of Blacksburg. Her community service activities include participating in the Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society.
The process of selecting the king and queen was a rigorous one. Starting with 40 applicants, the selection committee narrowed them down to 16 court candidates. After weeks of campaigning, Davis and Darnley won by receiving 20 and 25 percent of the votes, respectively.
Both Davis and Darnley are willing and ready to serve the university community by making special appearances at events, conducting emcee duties, and many other services for the university. For more information on Davis and Darnley is available on their homecoming court websites.
