Terry Herdman joins Oak Ridge Associated Universities board of directors
Terry Herdman, associate vice president for research computing at Virginia Tech, has been named to the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) Board of Directors. The appointment was announced during the 64th annual meeting of the ORAU Council of Sponsoring Institutions.
As associate vice president at Virginia Tech, Herdman specializes in high performance computing and is responsible for advocacy, planning, funding, and organization of research computing campus-wide. He is also professor of mathematics and director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Applied Mathematics at Virginia Tech. And he serves as the Virginia Tech liaison to Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Herdman said that as a member of the ORAU Council of Sponsoring Institutions, he has "witnessed ORAU’s development of strategic partnerships for collaboration on major scientific initiatives that have strengthened America’s leadership in science and technology. I welcome the opportunity to increase my involvement with ORAU as a board member." He said he looks forward to being an asset to ORAU in the development of future scientific research and educational programs.
Herdman is one of three cofounders of the Interdisciplinary Center for Applied Mathematics and has served as director for 21 years. He has directed Virginia Tech’s undergraduate program in applied and computational mathematics at the Blacksburg campus and the graduate program in interdisciplinary applied mathematics at Virginia Tech’s National Capital Region campus. He served six years as vice president for the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and is currently a member of the SIAM Education Committee and represents SIAM on the Board of Governors for Mu Alpha Theta.
Herdman is an associate editor for the Journal of Integral Equations and Applications. His research interests include modeling, analysis, parameter identification and approximations for systems governed by "Volterra and Functional Differential Equations." His research has been funded by the Air Force Research Laboratories, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, NASA Langley Research Center, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Herdman was a member of the NASA Large Space Systems Team that was awarded the 2008 NASA Center Team Award for contributions in the development and testing of inflation deployed, rigidizable space structures and materials.
Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) is a university consortium leveraging the scientific strength of 100 major research institutions to advance science and education by partnering with national laboratories, government agencies, and private industry. ORAU manages the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education for the U.S. Department of Energy. The ORAU board provides policy and fiduciary oversight of ORAU operations for its membership.
