Bradley Ross Hertel honored with emeritus status
Bradley Ross Hertel, associate professor of sociology in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences at Virginia Tech, was conferred the "associate professor emeritus" title by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors during the board's quarterly meeting on March 23.
The title of emeritus may be conferred on retired professors and associate professors, administrative officers, librarians, and exceptional staff members who have given exemplary service to the university and who are specially recommended to the board of visitors by Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board of visitors receive an emeritus certificate from the university.
A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1976, Hertel received four Fulbright Scholar awards to support his research in India. During his career, he studied the sociology of religion in the United States and India, the sociology of time, globalization of culture; social stratification in the United States and India, and problems in measurement. He received the annual Scholar Award for Sociology from the Virginia Social Science Association in 1987.
Hertel was a trustee of the American Institute of Indian Studies, and was a member of the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion and the Association for Sociology of Religion. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Oregon, and two master’s degrees and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin.
