Scott Gartner art exhibit at the Armory Gallery

Scott Gartner, associate professor of architecture in Virginia Tech's School of Architecture + Design, College of Architecture and Urban Studies, is featured in an art exhibition in the Armory Gallery on Feb. 12 through March 6.

The opening reception for Paper Tessellations will be Wed., Feb. 11, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Armory Gallery. Admission is free and open to the public.

The exhibition showcases 17 selected collages by Gartner from 2005 to 2008. The collages are constructed from found papers, magazine illustrations and other materials and range in size from 2-by-2 feet to 2-by-4 feet. Gartner has been creating various types of collages since coming to Virginia Tech, but this will be the first solo exhibition of his work.

“I am exploring several different compositional and thematic directions in my work, but have focused in my recent collages on achieving effects of transparency, using rhythmically intertwining fragments of various images that allow multiple forms to be read through one another in the same pictorial space,” said Gartner.

Gartner received a master’s degree in design studies from Harvard and a bachelor’s of architecture from the University of Houston. He has been teaching at Virginia Tech since 1989.
