Demetrios Telionis honored with emeritus status
Demetrios P. Telionis of Blacksburg, the Frank J. Maher professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics in the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech, was conferred the "professor emeritus" title by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors during the board's quarterly meeting on June 20.
The title of emeritus may be conferred on retired professors and associate professors, administrative officers, librarians, and exceptional staff members who have given exemplary service to the university and who are specially recommended to the board of visitors by Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board of visitors receive an emeritus certificate from the university.
A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1970, Telionis is an internationally recognized researcher who has contributed to the study of aerospace structure, including unsteady aerodynamics, high-angle-of-attack aerodynamics, and flow over fore-body configuration. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
A dedicated teacher who mentored undergraduate and graduate students in the study of fluid dynamics, Telionis received the College of Engineering Teaching Excellence Award in 1976, and the Frank. J. Maher Award for Excellence in Engineering Education in 1990.
Telionis received his master’s degree and Ph.D. from Cornell University.
