William G. Herbert honored with emeritus status
William G. Herbert of Blacksburg, professor of human nutrition, foods, and exercise in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech, was conferred the "professor emeritus" title by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors during the board's quarterly meeting on June 20.

The title of emeritus may be conferred on retired professors and associate professors, administrative officers, librarians, and exceptional staff members who have given exemplary service to the university and who are specially recommended to the board of visitors by Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board of visitors receive an emeritus certificate from the university.
A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1971, Herbert contributed to the knowledge of exercise physiology, exercise and bone biomechanics, and physical activity interventions in coronary heart disease and obstructive sleep apnea. From 1976 to 2008, he serves a director of the Cardiac Therapy (Rehabilitation) and Intervention Center, guiding the center to preeminence in cardiac rehabilitation. He also served as director of the Division of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, and developed the first exercise physiology laboratory at Virginia Tech.
A dedicated teacher, Herbert instructed both undergraduate and graduate students in exercise and health promotion courses. He was a founding Fellow of the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, and a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine.
Herbert received his bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and Ph.D. from Kent State University.
