Virginia Tech Fleet Services added four hybrid vehicles to its rental fleet on June 16, 2008. The additions reflect an effort to further advance the universtiy's commitments to sustainability and to further improve the overall fuel efficiency of the rental car fleet.

To introduce the new vehicles, Fleet Services invites Virginia Tech faculty and staff to test drive one of the new Chevrolet Hybrid Malibu vehicles on July 1 through July 3. Call (540) 231-9927 for more information and to schedule a date and time for a test drive.

“Purchasing hybrid vehicles is one way Fleet Services can accomplish its goal to improve fuel efficiency, cost savings, and environmental stewardship,” said Gene Reed, manager of Fleet Services.

The new Malibu hybrids join a Ford Hybrid Escape that has been in Fleet Services’ monthly rental fleet as a test for almost two years.

When compared to conventional gasoline or diesel powered engine vehicles, hybrid vehicles are usually quieter and release fewer gas emissions. The United States Environmental Protection Agency estimates the Chevrolet Hybrid Malibu to get approximately 32 miles per gallon on the highway.

In keeping with the university’s dedication to building a sustainable campus, Fleet Services has implemented a Green Fleet Initiative. In addition to introducing hybrid vehicles, the department is purchasing high mileage tires and flex-fuel vehicles.

Fleet Services is replacing lead wheel weights with zinc wheel weights to reduce the amount of lead deposits in ground and storm water. The department also recycles used motor oil and provides it to the Environmental Health and Safety Department saving the department from purchasing 1,500 gallons of oil each year.
