Deet's Place awarded prestigious Golden Cup award
Virginia Tech’s premier coffee, ice cream, and pastry shop--Deet’s Place--has been recognized with it’s second Golden Cup award, presented by the Specialty Coffee Association of America, which recognizes excellence in brewed coffee. The award is presented each year to retailers and restaurants whose specialty coffee is properly ground and brewed. Deet’s Place has submitted entries for this award twice, and has received the honor both times, with the previous win in 2000.
“We are very proud,” said Deet’s Place manager Don Harvey. “Proud of the staff and students who helped us achieve this award and meet such high standards.”
The award is based on the science of coffee--proper grind size, water quality and temperature, PH levels, coffee to water ratio, water contact time, and roast level. Holding times, cleaning of the brew basket, and staff training all play into the end result, as well. The majority of the judging is done in a laboratory with samples of water and brewed coffee submitted by entrants for analysis.
“We are pleased that Deet’s Place is being recognized for the efforts that we have put forth to be the best coffee in Blacksburg,” said assistant manager and brewmaster, Brian Babcock.
Deet’s Place is an original-concept establishment, roasting its own beans and boasting its own blends--including the popular “Hokie Blend.” Seventeen different varieties of coffee are available in more than 15 flavors. Deet’s Place also offers “Coffee College” classes throughout the year, covering topics such as grinding, roasting, and coffee “cupping.”
