Class of 2006 rises to President Steger's challenge
In a letter written last spring, Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger encouraged the Class of 2006 to show the true spirit of Ut Prosim (That I May Serve) by taking part in the Senior Challenge, an annual tradition in which members of the graduating class contribute funds for scholarships, classroom improvements, and campus improvement projects.
In order to bolster that participation, Steger offered to personally match every dollar donated on or before June 30, 2006. His offer inspired the graduating class to give at the highest level seen in years.
In total, the Class of 2006 pledged more than $10,000, a 37 percent increase over last year. By June 30, they had fulfilled $6,136 of those pledges. Accordingly, at commencement ceremonies this past May, representatives of the senior class presented a check for $6,136, and Steger fulfilled his promise by presenting the Senior Challenge with a matching check of his own.
This gift will be used to fund a stone–walled planting area with flowers, which will be designated in honor of the Class of 2006.
