This week eighth through 12th-grade students are getting hands-on experience using the latest software and technology at the VT STARS Family Technology Awareness Week at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research in Danville, Va.

Throughout the week students will use the latest software to make movies, cartoon characters, and 3-dimensional objects. Co-sponsored by Virginia Tech and the Southside Community Advocates for Learning Excellence-United for Progress (SCALE-UP), the workshops are designed to help prepare students for college and careers in engineering and technology. Participants include members from The Boys & Girls Club, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, as well as high school students from the Southside area.

On Saturday, Feb. 18 students can take part in the Virginia Tech College Opportunity Pathways, a half-day admissions/college information session lead by David Ford, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at Virginia Tech. In addition, if students attend at least two workshops throughout the week, they will be invited to attend a Hip Hop concert with the Rapademics Ohene on Saturday night.
