Student buys 3,000,000th biscuit, wins
When Ashley Raines, a family and consumer sciences education major from Cedar Bluff, Va., stepped into DXpress Thursday morning to buy orange juice and a biscuit, she was in for a surprise.
Raines bought the 3,000,000th biscuit and won a Deet's Gift Basket full of prizes, including a mug, T-shirt, books, coupons, freshly ground coffee and more. Edward Spencer, associate vice president for student affairs, presented the shocked Raines with a plate-sized biscuit and the basket. "I thought I was going to have a bad day today! I never expected this to happen," Raines said.
The biscuits are made by Bernice Johnston, who has been baking an average of 1,200 biscuits from scratch for DXpress and D2 in the Dietrick Dining Center since 1992. Rick Johnson, director of Housing and Dining Services; Ted Faulkner, associate director of Dining Services; and Kelvin Bergsten, Dietrick Dining Center manager, joined Spencer in presenting Johnston with a personalized chef's jacket and a plaque. Johnston's family and friends surprised her with their attendance, as well. "We're celebrating this milestone in Bernice's career and, at the same time, we're thanking the students for making her biscuits our most popular grab-and-go item," Spencer said.
