German Club hosts Midwinters Dance for all university students
Virginia Tech's German Club will be hosting its annual Midwinters Dance in the Squires Commonwealth Ballroom from 8:30 p.m. to 12 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 4 and 5. Tickets are $5 for both nights and can be purchased at the UUSA Ticket Office in Squires or from any German Club member.
All Virginia Tech students are invited to attend. This year's theme is "Dancing Down the Strip: Las Vegas Nights," and entertainment will include live bands Right Foot Red on Friday and Elvis and Fighting Gravity Saturday. "This is one of the biggest services we provide for students at the university," said Sumeet Bagai, the German Club's leadership chairman and publicity co-chairman for the event. "It gives students who do not have the opportunity to go to formals a chance to dress up and come out for a nice evening of live bands and dancing."
The Midwinters Dance is an annual tradition for the club, and is the largest dance held at Virginia Tech, last year drawing more than 1,500 students.
Founded in 1877 to provide a social outlet for students, the German Club is the oldest non-Greek fraternal organization at Virginia Tech named after the German Waltz, a popular dance at the time. The German Club was the Cadet Dancing Club dedicated to provide "the highest quality dances" for their fellow cadets. The motto of the German Club is "leadership for service through fellowship." One of the club's primary goals is service to the university and local communities. Members of the club dedicate thousands of man-hours annually for service projects such as holiday parties for underprivileged children, Special Olympics, the Christmas Store, and campus and community clean-ups. The club has unified over the years by the "pillars of strength" that are represented by the letters of the word GERMAN: Gentleman, Earnestness, Reputation and Responsibility, Manhood, Aim, and Name.
